AITA hopes to get approval to tour Pakistan for Davis Cup

The Indian team is expected to get permission to go to Pakistan for the upcoming Davis Cup tennis match. All India Tennis Association (AITA) gave this information on Saturday. AITA had recently sought advice from the Sports Ministry on whether they can send a team for the World Group One Playoff to be held in Pakistan on February 3 and 4.

AITA general secretary Anil Dhupar told PTI, “We have not yet received the written approval but will get it soon.” We have been told that since this is not a bilateral series and it is being organized by the ITA, the government does not interfere in such tournaments. “It is its procedure,” he said. The Sports Ministry has sent the request to the External Affairs and Home Ministries and the final decision will be taken only after their opinion. We hope to get approval soon. We are preparing for the competition and the trip.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) on Saturday said it is awaiting final confirmation regarding the participation of AITA players and officials in the Davis Cup tie to be held in Islamabad. PTF President Salim Saifullah said, “AITF has sent us a list of 11 officials and seven players for visas.” We are awaiting final confirmation of his arrival.

He said, “AITA has said that they will confirm their visit to Pakistan only after getting approval from the government.” He said that the names of AITA President Anil Jain and Secretary Anil Dhupar are also in the list. PTI had reported on December 26 that AITA had sought advice from the Sports Ministry for the team’s tour of Pakistan. Saifullah said that AITA has been given a deadline to finalize the arrival of its team and if they do not come, the International Tennis Federation may consider giving full points to the host.

The Indian Davis Cup team last visited Pakistan in 1964 when India won the match in Lahore. Won by 0. India and Pakistan also faced each other in 2019 but that match was played in Kazakhstan.
