Thiruvananthapuram. World Cup 2023 is going to start on Indian soil from 5th October. Earlier, Afghanistan Cricket Board has appointed former Indian team’s veteran player Ajay Jadeja as the mentor of its team.
Jadeja captained India in 13 ODIs and played 196 matches overall. Apart from playing three World Cups, he has 5359 runs at an average of 37.47 with six centuries and 30 fifties. Ajay Jadeja is the eighth highest run scorer in this format.
One of his most memorable ODI innings was his 45 off 25 balls in the 1996 Cricket World Cup quarter-final against Pakistan in Bengaluru, which also included scoring 40 in the last two overs against fast bowler Waqar Younis.
He also played 15 Tests for India from 1992 to 2000, scoring 576 runs at an average of 26.18. In which he had four half-centuries and a best individual score of 96.
Jadeja, who made his first-class debut for Haryana in 1988, played 111 first-class and 291 List A matches.
After his international career was interrupted by a five-year ban due to match-fixing, Jadeja worked in a few films as an actor.
Although his petition seeking permission to play international cricket was rejected by the Delhi High Court, Jadeja came back to play domestic cricket for Delhi and later became the captain-cum-coach of the Rajasthan team.
Then, Jadeja moved into cricket commentary and also served as the head coach of the Delhi team in the 2015–16 season.
Afghanistan, captained by Hashmatullah Shahidi, will begin their 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup campaign against Bangladesh at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on October 7.
