Birmingham: Out of form, India’s top shuttler PV Sindhu crashed out of the All England Championship after losing in straight sets to China’s Zhang Yi Man in the first leg of the tournament on Wednesday. Two-time Olympic medalist Sindhu could not mount any challenge to her Chinese rival as she went down 17-21 11-21 in a 39-minute women’s singles match. It was Sindhu’s third first leg loss since returning to court in January after recovering from an ankle injury.
In the first tournament of the year, Malaysia Open 2023, he was defeated in the first stage by Spain’s Carolina Marin. Sindhu was defeated by Supanida Ketthong of Thailand in the domestic tournament India Open. Sindhu had recently parted ways with coach Park Tae-sang amid repeated failures.
Earlier, Indian women’s doubles pair of Trisha Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela defeated seventh seeded Thailand’s Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Ravinda Prajongjai 21-18 21-14 in a 46-minute first round match. Trisha-Gayathri will now face the Japanese pair of Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota in the pre-quarterfinals. Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy registered wins in the men’s singles matches of the All England Championships on Tuesday to advance to the pre-quarterfinals.
