Doha. Anish Bhanwala created history by winning a bronze medal in the men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol (RFP) at the Lusail Shooting Range on Friday. This is the first medal for the country at the prestigious season-ending International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Finals (WCF).
Anish scored 27 in the final on Friday evening and won the bronze medal while World Championships bronze medalist German Peter Florian won the gold medal with a 35-hit. Reigning world champion and double Olympic medalist Li Yuhong of China finished second with 33-hits.
Anish scored 581 to reach the last six and finished sixth. But despite the presence of all three medal winners of the Baku World Championships in the final, he showed excellent form and finished on the podium.
Earlier in the day, Akhil Sheoran finished fifth in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions (3P) event. He became the fifth Indian finalist to miss out on a medal at this year’s WCF. Experienced Akhil had also won a bronze medal in the Baku World Championships.
Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar and Sift Kaur Samra also qualified for the competition in 3P shooting, but withdrew before the tournament.
