Indian wrestler Anhalt Panghal had to face defeat against world champion Akari Fujinami of Japan in the quarter-finals of the women’s 53 kg category here on Thursday. The Japanese player won by defeating the finalists.
Fujinami was considered a favorite to win against the final and the Indian player failed to cause the upset. The Japanese players registered the victory with more than a minute remaining in the first period.
The latter got a place in the Indian team when Vinesh Phogat was out due to injury. Earlier, the finalist had defeated Uzbekistan’s Jasmina Imaeva 11-0 to reach the quarter-finals where she would face Fujinami, the winner of the 2021 Oslo and 2023 Belgrade World Championships.
If Fujinami makes it to the finals, the finalists will get a chance to compete for the bronze medal through the repechage round.
