The warning comes days before the first phase of Lok Sabha elections (April 19), and follows an alert sent last October when some users were warned of a “potential state-sponsored” attack on their devices.
Apple sent an email
According to the report, Apple sent the mail to users in India at 12.30 am on April 11. The subject of this email is Alert, it says that Apple has detected a malware spyware sent targeting your iPhone. Your iPhone can be hacked by this attack. The purpose of this attack may be to target you. The reason for this could be both your name and your work. Apple said to take the warning seriously.
“Mercenary spyware attacks, such as the one using NSO Group’s Pegasus, are exceptionally rare and much more sophisticated than regular cybercriminal activity or consumer malware,” Apple said in its alert. These attacks cost millions of dollars and are deployed against small numbers of individuals individually, but the targeting is ongoing and global”. The company has advised users to be cautious of all links they receive and not to open any links or attachments received from unexpected or unknown people.
Opposition leaders have received warning of spyware attack
Apple has not held any stakeholder responsible for the recent wave of attacks. Last October, it had sent a similar notification to opposition leaders from all political parties – from Congress’s Shashi Tharoor to AAP’s Raghav Chadha and TMC’s Mahua Moitra – warning of a “spyware attack” on their iPhones.
