Ashwin becomes the second Indian bowler to take 500 test wickets

Rajkot. Indian experienced off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has become the second Indian and 9th bowler overall to take 500 wickets in Test cricket. Ashwin achieved this feat during the second day of the ongoing third Test match against England at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot on Friday.
The off-spinner had 499 wickets at the end of the second Test in Visakhapatnam and completed his 500th wicket with the wicket of Zak Crawley. Also ended England’s opening partnership of 89 runs on the second day.
After achieving this special achievement, Ashwin was congratulated by his teammates.

Ashwin is the ninth bowler in Test history to take 500 wickets. He is also the only Indian bowler after the great leg spinner Anil Kumble, who has taken 619 wickets in 132 Tests.

Ashwin achieved the feat of taking 500 wickets in 98 Test matches, making him the second fastest player to take 500 wickets in Test history behind legendary Sri Lankan off-spinner Muralitharan who did so in 87 Test matches. Each of the other seven bowlers played more than 100 Test matches to reach the milestone.
Ashwin, who made his Test debut against West Indies in New Delhi in November 2011, has been India’s strike bowler in Tests. Especially on home ground, where he has taken 347 wickets out of 500.
In his Test career, Ashwin has achieved the feat of taking five wickets and 10 wickets eight times in 34 matches. James Anderson, Lyon and Ashwin are the only active bowlers to take more than 400 wickets in Test cricket. Of Ashwin’s 500 wickets, 277 have been out caught, of which 12 were caught and bowled out, followed by 110 LBW, 100 bowled and 13 stumped outs.
