A big news is coming out from the Asia Cup. Sources in Sri Lanka Cricket said that the Super Four matches and the final match of the Asia Cup 2023 tournament can be held in Hambantota located in the south instead of Colombo.
Asian Cricket Council will announce soon
Sources have informed that the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) may make an announcement in this regard soon. The reason for changing the venue of the match is said to be heavy rains in Colombo and Kandy. Significantly, the shadow of rain is visible on the Asia Cup. Both India’s matches played at Kandy’s Pallekele Stadium were affected by rain.
drought in hambantota
The much-anticipated match between India and Pakistan saw only one innings played on Saturday, while India’s match against Nepal was also affected by rain. Sources said that broadcast operators and local communication service providers have been asked to shift their facilities to Hambantota. Hambantota is an arid region which has experienced drought in recent weeks.
The final match will no longer be played in Colombo
This means that five matches and the final of the Super Four to be held at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo can be held in Hambantota. The Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota was not part of the opening program of the Asia Cup. The last ODI here was played in August when Afghanistan hosted Pakistan in the second match of the three-match series.
Reserve day will be kept for India-Pakistan match
There is also a proposal to have a ‘reserve day’ for the next match between these two countries as the first match between India and Pakistan got rained off. The main attraction of the Asia Cup is the match between India and Pakistan, but due to the incompleteness of this match, people get disappointed.
