New Delhi: The dates of Asia Cup 2023 have been announced. The tournament, to be held from August 31 to September 17, will be played in Sri Lanka along with Pakistan. The hosting remains with Pakistan. Pakistan Cricket Board President Najam Sethi was overjoyed after the announcement of the tournament dates. He was seen heaping praise on Jai Shah, secretary of the BCCI and chairman of the Asian Cricket Council. PCB’s Najam Sethi was the person who proposed the ‘hybrid model’, which ended the Indo-Pakistan ego war. In a video released on the Pakistan Cricket Board’s Twitter handle, Najam Sethi says, I am very happy that our hybrid model has been accepted. This means that PCB will play in this tournament as the host, which was necessary due to the Indian cricket team not touring Pakistan. I appreciate the efforts of Jai Shah who strengthened the Asian Cricket Council. We collectively protect each other’s interests. It is also our aim to give opportunities and stage to emerging Asian countries.

For the time being Najam Sethi may be praising Jai Shah, but for the past few months many former Pakistani cricketers even Najam Sethi himself were engaged in giddarbhaki. Threats were being given to the Indian Cricket Board. Pressure was being created to come to Pakistan and play Asia. It was being said that if India does not come to Pakistan to play the Asia Cup, then we too will not come to India for the 2023 World Cup.

The hybrid model of the tournament will see four matches being hosted in Pakistan and the remaining nine matches in Sri Lanka. In the tournament, India, Pakistan and Nepal have been placed in one group while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in the other group. A total of 13 ODIs, including the final, will be played in the Asia Cup 2023, which is being seen as a preparation for the ODI World Cup to be held in India in October-November. Sri Lanka are the defending champions, while India last won the tournament in the 50-over format in 2018 in the UAE.
