Colombo (Uttam Hindu News): Here R. Rohit Sharma’s Indian team bowled brilliantly on Tuesday at the Premadasa Stadium to defend a small score and end Sri Lanka’s 13-match winning streak in One Day Internationals. In the fourth match of the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup, India defeated Sri Lanka by 41 runs after being all out for 213 runs in a low-scoring thriller and secured a place in the final. It was not easy for Sri Lanka to chase the target of 213 runs on this pitch. The hosts lost the wicket of Pathum Nissanka in the third over, followed by two more wickets in the power-play.
Out of these three wickets, two wickets were taken by fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, while the third was taken by Mohammad Siraj. Charith Asalanka and Sadira Samarawickrama added 43 runs for the fourth wicket. Before this, Kuldeep Yadav came into action and dismissed both the batsmen in consecutive overs. However, Sri Lanka bounced back thanks to a brilliant partnership between Dhananjaya de Silva and Dinuth Velalej for the seventh wicket. The pair added 63 runs in a late fightback to pull Sri Lanka closer to victory, with 44 runs needed from 55 balls.
After the fall of wickets at the other end, lone warrior Dinuth Velez fought till the end. The 20-year-old’s flexible innings was the centerpiece of the match for Sri Lanka as the young spinner stunned India by taking his first five-wicket haul. His stellar performance earned him praise from Virat Kohli during the post-match handshake. In the end it was the spinners who turned the tables for India as Jadeja took one wicket and Kuldeep took two wickets in the end to seal the match. He finished with dominant figures of (9.3-0-43-4).
Earlier in the day, India won the toss and batted first and scored 213 runs on a difficult pitch, which was very challenging for batting. Rohit Sharma showed excellent batting skills and scored his second consecutive half-century in the tournament.
Apart from him, KL Rahul once again batted purposefully in the middle overs and scored 39 runs. It was a historic day for the Sri Lankan spinners, as India were bowled out by the spinners for the first time. The Sri Lankan trio of Dimuth Velalej (5-40), Charith Asalanka (4-19) and Mahesh Thekshan shared all 10 wickets in the Indian innings.
