Asia Cup may be out of Pakistan, Sri Lanka may host the tournament

New Delhi. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) is expected to move the Asia Cup out of Pakistan, which was originally supposed to host the continental tournament.

Last year, BCCI secretary and ACC president Jay Shah made it clear that the Indian team would not travel to Pakistan for the continental championship and demanded that the tournament be held at a neutral venue.

On the other hand, Pakistan has also threatened to boycott the ODI World Cup to be played in India in October-November.

According to a report in India Today, the Asia Cup could be shifted to a new country entirely, with Sri Lanka leading the race to host the tournament.

Interestingly, the island nation failed to host the Asia Cup last year due to an economic crisis, as a result of which the tournament was shifted to the UAE.

Notably, ACC President and BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had informed that India would not travel to Pakistan due to security issues and would work towards moving the tournament out of Pakistan.

In response, the PCB proposed a hybrid model, in which India would play its matches at neutral sites and Pakistan would host the remaining matches in its home country.

Pakistan and India do not play bilateral cricket and they have only met in global tournaments or multi-team events since 2013 due to the tense political situation between the two countries.

India’s last visit to Pakistan was for the 2008 Asia Cup, while Pakistan’s last visit to India was for the 2016 T20 World Cup. The two teams last played each other in the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.
