The 34-year-old opener announced his decision citing injury problems after meeting with senior officials of the Bangladesh Cricket Board in Dhaka, a month after his U-turn to retire from international cricket. Tamim said after the meeting – I have informed them (BCB officials) that from today I am leaving the post of Bangladesh ODI team captain. I have given the reason. Injury is an issue.
Tamim said- I have always thought about the team first. For the betterment of the team (I thought) I should give up the captaincy and concentrate as a player and try to give my best whenever I get the opportunity. He also informed Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina about his decision and she has accepted. Tamim retired from all forms of international cricket during the recent home series in July, but took back his decision a day later at Hasina’s request.
The veteran opener broke down in tears as he announced his international retirement following his team’s 17-run defeat in the first of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. Tamim was publicly criticized by BCB president Nazmul Hasan. Tamim admitted that he is not 100 per cent fit, yet he played the match against Afghanistan. Haseena invited Tamim and Najmul to her residence the next day, prompting the cricketer to change his mind. Tamim, however, missed the remaining two ODIs against Afghanistan and took a six-week break to recover from the injury.
After Tamim pulled out of the series, opener Liton Das led Bangladesh in the remaining Afghanistan ODIs. BCB’s head of cricket operations Jalal Younis said that Tamim’s disc injury has not fully healed. Jalal said- Doctors have suggested that it will not be possible for him to play in the Asia Cup. He will be available for the New Zealand series and the World Cup. He will be given all kinds of support to recover from the injury.
The BCB official said that the name of the new ODI captain will be decided at the appropriate time. Bangladesh is scheduled to host New Zealand for three ODIs in late September after playing in the Asia Cup. They will begin their World Cup campaign in India against Afghanistan on October 7 in Dharamsala.
