Australia may withdraw from hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games and its sports officials have asked the international federation to consider bids from other countries.
Commonwealth Games Australia chief executive Craig Phillips made the comments on Monday after the Gold Coast withdrew from hosting. Earlier in July, Victoria province had withdrawn from hosting.
Phillips said that Australia has not completely ruled out hosting yet but the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) should seriously consider other options. “We have signaled (to the CGF) they will have our full support in doing so,” Phillips told the Australian Associated Press.,
“Hosting the Games is our priority and we will try to do so, but if they have better options then they should seriously consider them,” he said.
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said on Sunday that he was not getting support from the government and therefore could not host the Commonwealth Games. The Gold Coast previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2018. Apart from that, Perth had also shown interest in hosting the 2026 competition.
