India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden defeated Netherlands’ Wesley Koolhof and Croatia’s Nikola Mektic in straight sets to reach the men’s doubles quarter-finals of the Australian Open tennis tournament here on Monday. The second seeded pair of India and Australia registered a 7-6 7-6 win against the former world number one pair of Koolhof and Mektic.

The pair of Bopanna and Ebden lost serve in the beginning of both the sets but came back to win against the 14th seeded pair. Bopanna and Ebden will face sixth-seeded Argentine pair of Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in the quarterfinals. Bopanna’s service disappointed him in the beginning. By breaking their serve in the second game of the first set, the opposing pair took a 3-0 lead within 15 minutes. Bopanna, who recently retired from Davis Cup, however made a comeback with some excellent backhands and scored points.

In the seventh game of the first set, the pair of Koolhof and Mektic made some unforced errors and gave the India-Australia pair a chance to make a comeback. After this, Bopanna played brilliantly at the net and scored a lot of points. Bopanna lost serve at the beginning of the second game as well, giving the Netherlands-Croatia pair a 4-2 lead. In the eighth game, Bopanna and Ebden once again made a comeback by breaking the opponent pair’s service. In the tiebreaker, the Bopanna-Ebden pair took a 3-0 lead and then won the set and the match.
