Sydney, 4 August (HS). Indian badminton player P.V. Sindhu crashed out of the Australian Open badminton tournament after losing to Chinese-American Beiwen Zhang in the quarterfinals on Friday. Zhang defeated Sindhu 21-12, 21-17. Sindhu is currently ranked world number 17 and Zhang is ranked world number 12.
In the round of 32, Sindhu defeated Ashmita Chaliha 21-18, 21-13 before reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament. He then defeated Aakarshi Kashyap 21-14, 21-10 in the round of 16.
Sindhu has won medals at various tournaments such as the Olympics and the BWF circuit, including a gold medal at the 2019 World Championships. She is the first and only Indian to become a badminton world champion and only the second athlete from India to win two consecutive individual medals at the Olympic Games. She reached her career-high world ranking of No. 2 in April 2017.
She represented India at the 2016 Summer Olympics (Rio), where she became the first Indian badminton player to reach an Olympic final. She won the silver medal after losing to Spain’s Carolina Marin. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics (Tokyo) for the second time in a row and won a bronze medal, becoming the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals.
He has been awarded the Khel Samman Arjuna Award and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna as well as India’s fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri and third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan.
