Melbourne | Novak Djokovic produced an impressive quarter-final performance to beat Andre Rublev 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 here on Wednesday and reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Djokovic has beaten his highest-ranked opponent of his Melbourne campaign so far in World No. 6 Rublev.
The fourth seed responded to Rublev’s powerful groundstrokes with a typically resilient defense and recorded a comfortable two-hour, three-minute victory at Rod Laver Arena.
Djokovic said, overall I think the match is not known in the first two sets. It was a really close match. Rublev is a great competitor, a great player. I respect him.”
He further said, I played all the shots in the best way today. That’s why I am very happy.
The 35-year-old Djokovic’s performance put an end to any doubts about his left hamstring issue, which hampered him in his first three matches at Melbourne Park as he chases a record 10th Australian Open title.
Djokovic will take on 7-6(6), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 winner Tommy Paul in an all-American match with Ben Shelton in the Melbourne semi-finals.
The Serbian has been unbeaten at the Australian Open since the semi-finals, winning all nine occasions he has reached the last four.(IANS)
