MELBOURNE: Defending Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina stormed into the Australian Open semi-finals for the first time at the year’s first Grand Slam with a straight-set win over former major winner Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia on Tuesday.

Kazakhstan’s 22nd seed Rybakina defeated 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko in one hour and 19 minutes.

Ostapenko had earlier dominated career matches against the Kazakh player but on Tuesday Rybakina maintained her momentum. Rybakina had defeated world number one Ega Swiatek two days ago.

Rybakina won by serving an ace on her third match point.

Rybakina will face the winner of the match between third seed Jessica Pegula and former two-time champion Victoria Azarenka in the semifinals.
