Australian opener David Warner admits to being exhausted ahead of India tour

New Delhi | Veteran Australia opener David Warner has admitted to being fatigued ahead of the team’s upcoming Test tour of India and said he may miss Cricket Australia’s awards ceremony on Monday to recover from a busy schedule at home.

Warner’s busy schedule at home came to an end on Friday when his side Sydney Thunder crashed out of the Big Bash League Finals. He played in Australia’s white-ball series against Zimbabwe, New Zealand, the West Indies, the Men’s T20 World Cup, followed by five Tests and six BBL matches against the West Indies and South Africa.

Warner also suffered a lot of mental agony over the failure of his appeal against the lifetime leadership ban. “It was very challenging. I am very tired,” he told reporters.

The 36-year-old Warner has five days to rest before leaving for India on Tuesday but one of those days will be spent at Cricket Australia’s awards ceremony which will be attended by the Test team.

Warner said, “There are some players who are playing in the UAE league and will not attend the award ceremony. It would have been better to spend another night at home from my point of view.”

Warner had a tough time in the Big Bash League. His best innings was 36 off 20 balls in a rain-curtailed match. His best performance of the home season was a double century against South Africa in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne.

Warner looked uncertain about returning to the BBL next season, which would be after the ODI World Cup in India in October-November 2023.
