Perth: Australia’s Annabel Sutherland on Friday scored the fastest double century in women’s Test history when she achieved the feat in 248 balls on the second day of the one-off Test against South Africa here. Earlier, the record for the fastest double century was in the name of Karen Rolton of Australia, who completed her double century in 306 balls against England in Leeds in 2001.
Twenty-two year old Annabel was out after scoring 210 runs in 256 balls. Thanks to her double century, Australia declared the first innings by scoring 575 runs for nine wickets, which is the highest score of any team in women’s Test cricket.
In the first innings, the South African team was bundled out for just 76 runs and in the second innings too, it lost three wickets for 67 runs by the end of the day’s play. South Africa is still trailing by 432 runs on the basis of first innings.
Annabel, however, fell four runs short of breaking Ellyse Perry’s record of Australia’s highest individual score of 213 not out in 2017. Anabel, who came to bat at number six, scored only seven runs in the first 35 balls but after getting into the rhythm, targeting the South African bowlers, she hit 27 fours and two sixes.
In women’s Test cricket, only Pakistan’s Kiran Baloch (242), India’s Mithali Raj (214) and Ellis have played bigger individual innings than Annabel. Annabel also became the youngest Australian player and the second youngest batsman in the world to score a double century. She is the ninth batsman in the world to score a double century. Annabel had scored a century in 149 balls and missed by one ball of equaling her own record of the fastest century by a female batsman.
