Bajrang is planning to skip the World Championships trials on August 25 and 26. He wants to train abroad to prepare for the Asian Games starting in Hangzhou on September 23. Bajrang was among six wrestlers to protest at Jantar Mantar against outgoing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Besides him, Commonwealth Games gold medalist Deepak Punia (86kg) is also not keen to compete at the World Championships in Belgrade from September 16.
Deepak also wants to practice abroad for a long time to prepare for the Asian Games. SAI said in a statement issued here on Tuesday, ‘We had received the proposal of Bajrang on 18 August. He plans to train for 39 days in Kyrgyzstan (August 21-September 28) with physiotherapist Anuj Gupta, personal coach Sujit Mann, ‘strength and conditioning’ specialist Qazi Kiran Mustafa Hasan and ‘sparring partner’ Jitendra Kinha. Deepak wants to train in Khasavyurt (Russia) for five weeks (August 23 to September 28) before the Asian Games.
He said, ‘The committee discussed the demands of these two. The committee gave in-principle approval to the proposal of both Bajrang and Deepak, subject to the condition of providing fitness certificate with proper reason for not participating in the senior world championship trials before going abroad.
“Bajrang then explained the reason for not participating in the World Championship on August 19 and underwent a fitness test on August 21 at SAI’s Sonepat centre,” he added. In this he was declared fit. Meanwhile, Deepak has also submitted his answer and medical certificate on 22 August. Both have submitted the required documents. The SAI has now requested the athletes to provide their travel dates. Tickets will be booked on the first available flight as soon as their reply is received.
