Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia on Saturday requested the Sports Ministry to restart wrestling activities in the country as only seven months are left for the Paris Olympics. He also said that no one is taking the preparations for the Olympics seriously.
Wrestling has come to a standstill in the country for the last several months after the wrestlers protested against former Indian Wrestling Federation President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The controversy did not end even after the election of new office-bearers of the WFI as the Sports Ministry suspended the panel headed by Sanjay Singh which had violated its own constitution by announcing the National Under-15 and Under-20 Championships.
Bajrang wrote on X, “Wrestling activities have been stopped for the last several months. No national championship or camp was even organised. Bajrang, who returned his Padma Shri award after Sanjay Singh became the president, said, “Olympics are after seven months but no one is taking it seriously. Wrestling has given us consecutive medals in the last four Olympics.
He said, “I request the Sports Ministry to start wrestling activities soon so that the future of the players is secure.”
