Sylhet: Mushfiqur Rahim has scored the fastest ODI century in Bangladesh cricket history. The wicket-keeper batsman achieved the feat in just 60 balls with 14 fours and two sixes in the second ODI against Ireland. Thanks to Mushfiqur’s century, Bangladesh scored 349 runs for the loss of six wickets in the stipulated 50 overs, which is also the team’s highest score in ODI cricket. In this way, the record of 338/8 made in the last match was also broken. Mushfiqur scored a century on the last ball of the match innings, before which this record was in the name of Shakib-al-Hasan, who scored a century in 2009 against Zimbabwe in 63 balls.
Mushfiqur and Tauheed Hridayat put on 128 runs from just 78 balls for the fourth wicket, which is also the fastest 100-plus partnership by a Bangladeshi pair in terms of run-rate. This is the second-highest stand in Bangladesh after Inzamam-ul-Haq and Moin Khan, who both added 104 off 61 balls in the Asia Cup final in 2000. The ball was seaming a lot amid overcast conditions, only 42 runs were scored in the first powerplay. Apart from Mushfiqur Rahim, captain Tamim Iqbal scored 23, Litton Das scored 70, Najmul Hasan Shanto scored 73 and Tauheed Hriday scored 49 runs. The match was abandoned due to rain before the start of the Irish innings. Bangladesh has a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
