After finishing on top in the group stage by defeating top seeds China, India defeated Hong Kong on the back of two-time Olympic medalists PV Sindhu, Asmita Chaliha and the doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto. Making a comeback after a long time due to injury, Sindhu won 21-7, 16-21, 21-12 in a tough match against lower ranked Lo Sin Yan Happy.
After this, the women’s doubles pair of Tanisha and Ashwini doubled India’s lead by defeating the world number 18 pair of Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam 21-10, 21-14 in 35 minutes. Asmita sealed India’s victory with a comfortable 21-12, 21-13 win over Yeung Sum Yi and ensured at least a bronze medal for the team. “It is a comfortable result for the women’s team,” former national coach Vimal Kumar, who was with the team, told PTI from Shah Alam.
I am very happy with his performance. “There was a little drift so initially it was difficult to control the shuttle as the shuttle was going out,” he said. Sindhu had to struggle a bit as one end was difficult due to drift but it is a good result, we are in the semi-finals. Now India will face the winner of the second quarter-final between Japan and China.
