BCCI appoints female auctioneer for Women’s Premier League player auction: Report

New Delhi | The first auction of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will begin in Mumbai on Monday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has roped in a woman auctioneer to conduct the auction process. A report in Cricbuzz said that Mallika Sagar, a Mumbai-based art collector consultant and partner in the firm Art India Consultants for modern and contemporary Indian art, will oversee the auction. Incidentally, Mallika, who auctioned Pundole in Mumbai, had auctioned the 2021 Pro Kabaddi League.
The report added that the BCCI has also informed the five teams that they have to bring at least 15 players in the squad while the minimum expenditure should be Rs 9 crore. They will have Rs 12 crore in the purse, with each side being allowed to buy only six overseas players.
The report quoted BCCI’s communication to the five teams as saying, “The minimum (15) and maximum (18) squad sizes to be given to the franchises, the minimum squad expenditure (9 crores) and the maximum number of overseas players in the squad (6)”. I was reminded of the WPL squad rules.”
A total of 409 players will be up for bid in the WPL player auction, of which 246 are Indian cricketers and 163 overseas players, including eight players from associate countries.
The players will be presented in sets based on their specialisation, marquee players, batsmen, all-rounders, wicket-keepers, fast bowlers, spin bowlers and emerging players. The players for the auction have been divided into five different slabs of base price – Rs 50 lakh, Rs 40 lakh, Rs 30 lakh, Rs 20 lakh and Rs 10 lakh.
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, all-rounder Deepti Sharma, Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Shafali Verma, Australia’s premier all-rounder Ellyse Perry, England left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, New Zealand captain Sophie Devine and former captain Deandra Dottin of West Indies is among the players with the highest base price.
The report concluded by saying that the auction will take place at Jasmine Hall, 1, Jio World Convention Center and it will start at 2.30 pm. A day before the auction, the BCCI will conduct a pre-auction briefing for the franchisees at 8 pm on Sunday.
