BCCI on Thursday announced the T20, ODI and Test teams for the South Africa tour. Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli Has been given a break from the white ball series. Suryakumar Yadav has been given the captaincy of T20 team and KL Rahul has been given the captaincy of ODI team. Virat and Rohit will go to South Africa to play the test series. The Indian selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar wanted to make Rohit Sharma the T20I captain for the South Africa tour. But the Indian captain requested a break from the white ball series during this tour. A report in The Indian Express said that Rohit attended the selection meeting on Thursday via video call from London to inform about his decision.
Rohit Sharma is holidaying in London
Rohit Sharma is currently holidaying in London with his family. Although the selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar wanted to give back the T20I captaincy to Rohit, everyone agreed to his request. Rohit will go to South Africa for a two-match Test series starting from 26 December. Rohit Sharma will captain the team in these two matches. From this it became clear that Rohit will soon be seen captaining the team in T20 format also.
Rohit has not played a single match since the 2022 T20 World Cup
If seen, Rohit has not played in this format since the semi-final defeat by England in the T20 World Cup 2022. But there is a strong possibility of him being the captain in the T20 World Cup to be held next year. BCCI has not made any official announcement regarding the change in India’s T20 captaincy till now. Hardik Pandya has been leading India in Rohit’s absence since the T20 World Cup in Australia last year but he has never been officially made India’s T20 captain.
Suryakumar was made T20 captain
The selection committee has also not selected Hardik Pandya for the South Africa tour. Hardik was injured during the ODI World Cup and since then he is away from the field. He could play only four matches in the World Cup. Has not participated in any match since getting injured in the match against Bangladesh in the World Cup. There is no clarity on his return also. In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav has been given the captaincy of T20.
Rohit will captain in T20 World Cup 2024
A BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity that Rohit has been offered the T20 captaincy but he is in the UK on holidays and wants a long break after a tough four-month season until the end of the World Cup. . But as captain, he respects the dressing room the most. If he is ready to lead India in the T20 World Cup, he will lead.
Kohli and Bumrah were also given break
Rohit is not the only senior member of the World Cup team who has been given a break from the limited overs series of the South Africa tour. Star batsman Virat Kohli has also been given a break and he will also join the team only for the Test series. Virat had also demanded a break from the white ball series in this tour. KL Rahul will lead the national team in ODIs. Jasprit Bumrah will also be seen in the team only during the Test series.
Different players in all formats
Interestingly, most of the players selected for ODI are not part of the Test or T20I team. Only Shreyas Iyer, Mukesh Kumar and Ruturaj Gaikwad are part of all three teams. Axar Patel has been dropped from the T20 squad and Ravindra Jadeja is the new T20 vice-captain for the series. The T20 series is starting from 10th December.
