New Delhi . Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has told centrally contracted Indian players that they will have to prove themselves in domestic cricket if they want to play for the country and warned of serious consequences if they do not participate. .

Shah said in a letter to players earlier this week that the “trend” of prioritizing the IPL over domestic cricket was a cause for concern for us. Cricinfo has read this letter. Jay Shah has also written that the board is also proud of the success of IPL. He wrote that some players have started giving priority to IPL over domestic cricket. This has started emerging as a trend and this is a cause for concern for us.

We never expected things like this. Domestic cricket has always been the foundation on which Indian cricket stands. We have never tried to give less importance to this tournament. It is very important to understand that domestic cricket is the backbone of Indian cricket. It has been continuously giving new talents to the Indian team for many years.

Our vision for Indian cricket has been clear from the beginning – every cricketer who wants to play for India has to prove himself in domestic cricket. The performance of any player in domestic tournaments is given a lot of importance in the selection process. If a player does not participate in domestic cricket it will have serious implications.

Shah said the letter was not a criticism of any player, but a reminder of the values ​​that have guided Indian cricket over the years. Collectively we declare that we do not in any way wish to diminish the importance of domestic cricket or weaken its basic structure. It is our responsibility to work together to take Indian cricket to new heights.

In recent times, there has been a lot of discussion about players like Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Chahar because they were not participating in domestic cricket. As per the BCCI contract, Shreyas Iyer is in Grade B, while Ishan Kishan is in Grade C. Last time when BCCI renewed the contracts, Chahar’s name was out of the list.

Kishan last played for India in the T20 series against Australia in November. He then withdrew from the South Africa tour at the end of the year due to personal reasons. After this he was dropped from the ongoing Test series against England. There were speculations that Kishan would participate in the Ranji Trophy before returning to the Indian team, but he did not do so. He was reportedly practicing in Baroda with Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya.

On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has also not participated in Ranji Trophy. He was dropped from the India-England series after playing the first two Tests. He took part in one round of Ranji Trophy but has been away from domestic cricket after being dropped from the Indian team. After getting fit, Chahar had sought leave for personal reasons. However, he did not even take part in Rajasthan’s last match in the Ranji Trophy. He last played competitive cricket in December. However, he did take part in the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy and the 20-over Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at the end of last year.
