Kadam won bronze medal in singles

Talking about Kadam, he was defeated by Freddy Setiawan of Indonesia 17-21, 21-15, 21-16 in the semi-finals. Apart from this, Kadam won a bronze medal in the singles SL4 category. In mixed doubles, Bhagat and Ramdas were defeated by Hikmat Ramdani and Lini Ratri of Indonesia 21-17, 21-17.

Among other Indians, Krishna Nagar won gold in the SH6 category, while Manasi Joshi and T Murugesan won gold in the women’s doubles SL3, SU5 category. Parul Parmar and Shantiya Viswanathan also won medals in this category. In the same sequence, Nityashree has won silver medal in women’s SH6 category, while Deep Ranjan and Manoj, Chirag Baretha and Raj Kumar were victorious in men’s SL3, SL4 category.

Para badminton is a part of badminton for athletes with different types of physical disabilities. It made its debut as a Paralympic sport at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. However, it has been played internationally since the 1990s. The sport is governed by the Badminton World Federation. The first World Championship was held in 1998 in Amersfoort, Netherlands. Since 2001, this tournament is held once every two years. Till date 12 world championships have been held, out of which the last one was held in Switzerland in 2019.

Like badminton, para-badminton athletes compete in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. There are 6 categories of athletes to provide a level playing field to all disabled players. Specifically, there are 6 classes (2 wheelchair and 4 standing) as detailed below. Two wheelchair classes and one standing class (players with lower limb impairments) play half-court for singles.

Wheelchair 1 WH1: Players in this category require a wheelchair to play the game. They are for athletes with impairment of both lower limbs and trunk.

Wheelchair 2 WH2: It is for sportspersons who have impairment of one or both limbs and minimal or no impairment of torso. Like WH1, players in this category also require a wheelchair to play the game.

standing upper 3SL3: The players of this class have defects in one or both the organs and the balance of walking or running is bad. Apart from this, the player has to play standing in this class.

Standing Upper SL4: Here also a player has to play standing. But here players have less loss than in SL3. The athlete may have loss of one or both limbs and minimal disability in walking/running balance.

Standing Upper 5 SU5: In this there is disability in the upper limbs of the players. The disability may be on the playing or non-playing hand.

Standing Stature 6SH6: This category includes players whose height is short due to a genetic condition, also known as ‘dwarfism’.
