Bhambri-Olivetti pair out of Marrakesh Open semi-finals

India’s Yuki Bhambri and his French partner Albano Olivetti crashed out of the men’s doubles semi-finals of the ATP Marrakesh Open tennis tournament after losing to second seeds Austrian pair of Lucas Meidler and Alexander Erler. The pair of Bhambri and Olivetti had to face defeat 5-7 6-3 7-10 in a hard-fought semi-final match of the ATP 250 tournament.
Both the teams gave a tough challenge to each other. The pair of Meidler and Erler won the first set but Bhambri and Olivetti made a spectacular comeback by winning the second set. The Super Tiebreaker also saw a tough contest but in the end Meidler and Erler were successful in registering victory. Bhambri and Olivetti had earlier defeated third seeds Nicolas Barrientos and Rafael Matos to reach the men’s doubles semi-finals. Bhambri paired with Olivetti for the first time this season. He was playing with Robin Haase of the Netherlands for most of the tournament.
The Indian player had paired with former New Zealand teammate Michael Venus at the Miami Masters, where they had a first-round exit. Bhambri, who is ranked 62nd in the world rankings, is second after Rohan Bopanna among Indian players in the doubles rankings. Bopanna is at the top in the world rankings. It will be interesting to see whether Bopanna selects Bhambri as his partner for the Paris Olympics or not. Being among the top 10 players in the world rankings, Bopanna can choose the partner of his choice.
Bhambri confirmed to PTI that Bopanna has not yet spoken to him about his potential partner. The last date for sending direct entries is June 10 while the National Olympic Committee can send the names of the players till June 19. Meanwhile, at the ATP Houston Open, India’s N Sriram Balaji and his German partner Andre Begemann crashed out of the semi-finals after losing 7-6(5) 2-6 3-10 to fourth-seeded Australian pair of Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson.
