Bhavani Devi Asian Championship: Bhavani Devi created history! The first Indian to perform ‘Aashi’

Pudhari Online Desk : Indian swordsman Bhavani Devi created history in the Asian Fencing Championship on Monday. She secured the medal by defeating Misaki Imura in the penultimate round. This is the first medal for India in the competition. Japanese Misaki is the current world champion and number one swordsman. Bhavani defeated Misaki 15-10 and entered the margin. Bhavanila will have to beat Uzbekistan’s Zeynab Debekovavar to get the final ferry entry.
The 29-year-old Bhavanila would have got a bye in the round of 64. After that she defeated Kazakhstan’s Dosp Karinala in the round of 32. In the pre-quarterfinals, he defeated third seed Ozaki Sericha 15-11. Then in the quarter-finals, world champion and number one swordsman Misakila Dhul Charoon Upantya Pheri Gathoon medal was assured.
Specially Bhavani would have started her career in 2004. Then in 2009, she started her international career by winning bronze medal in the competition held in Malaysia. She won silver and bronze medals in the 2012 Jersey Commonwealth Championships.
Bhavani won her first international competition in Iceland in 2017 with Ginkoon Bharatha’s boat-like banana. In the Tournoi Satellite Fencing Championship held at Reykjavik in 2018, she would have been successful in getting the silver medal. She would have participated in the Tokyo Olympics but the medal-winning boat would have been a failure. She would have won the first encounter in the Tokyo Olympics but lost the second encounter. That’s why she dropped out of the competition.
Arjuna Award has been conferred on Bhavanila. She was born on 27 August 1993 in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. She did her schooling from Muruga Dhanushkodi Girls Higher Secondary School till 12th standard and then from St. Joseph’s Engineering College till her graduation.
