New Delhi | After spin all-rounder Ashton Agar was sent home from the Test tour of India, former Australia captain Mark Taylor is confused about the future of the left-arm bowler in Test cricket. Agar, who played in the Sydney Test against South Africa last month alongside off-spinner Nathan Lyon, is no longer in the Test squad, having been dropped from Australia’s second-choice spin option, especially with the arrival of Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnmann, who have played in Nagpur and New Delhi. “I don’t know what his future is as a Test player,” Taylor was quoted as saying by Wide World of Sports on Wednesday. They picked him for the Sydney Test, which I thought was a good selection, considering they were playing for the series in India. Was thinking about. But then they didn’t pick him in India. He further added, “If they are not picking him in India, I am not sure how they can pick him again.” This is particularly worrying for Ashton Agar if he hopes to play Test cricket again.

He has been in the team for a long time. I have no doubt now that the selectors will be looking at Matthew Kuhnmann as a left-arm spinner, so I don’t know what will happen to Agar.

Agar has not been a regular feature in Australia’s Test team, despite scoring a rapid 98 as a number eleven batsman on debut against England in the 2013 Ashes. Since then, he has taken only nine wickets in five Tests at an average of 52.
