Nagpur. Ahead of the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, the visiting Australian team called the Indian spin-friendly pitch a doctored wicket. He is constantly raising questions that the wickets have been made keeping in mind the Indian spinners. The wicket for the first Test at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium here has been described by the Australian team as definitely spin-friendly and helping the Indian spinners led by Ravichandran Ashwin.
On Wednesday, India skipper Rohit Sharma rubbished all allegations made about pitches being prepared for Indian spinners and said that they will have to play with whatever wickets they get, just like the Indian team on Australia tour. But she does.
He said in the pre-game press conference, tampered wicket? I think we have to focus on the cricket that is going to be played for the next five days. Don’t worry too much about pitch. We played here in the last series. A lot was talked about the pitches, all the 22 cricketers who are going to play, they are all top class cricketers. So there is no need to worry about the pitch.”
The Indian skipper was also asked how he would bat when the ball is turning a lot as many of his teammates have been weak against good spin bowling.
When the ball spins a lot, your approach, your preparation, your way of scoring runs becomes very important. When you play on such pitches, it is important to have a counter-attacking method as well. This is how you will score runs. Spinners are smart, opposition captains are smart. They set the field straight, so it is not possible to score boundaries so easily. You have to do better. Rotate the strike and see which ways you can score runs.”
He said, yes, it is going to be challenging. If you see our last series against England, we played very well but obviously Australia are a different team. They have quality spinners who can cause trouble for us. No doubt. We know what we need to do.”
The Indian skipper was also asked who he would pick from the four spinners he has at his disposal. India’s team for the first two Tests has four spinners in R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Akshar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. Rohit said, they will take things match by match.
