Calgary: India’s Commonwealth Games gold medalist Lakshya Sen defeated defending All England champion Li Shi Feng (world No. 10) of China 21-18, 22-20 in straight games to clinch the men’s singles title at the Canada Open 2023. This is Lakshya’s second BWF World Tour 500 title as he had earlier won the India Open in January 2022. Lakshya, currently ranked 19th in the world, won the title by defeating world number four Kunlavut Witidsorn of Thailand in the semi-finals while world number 11 shuttler Kento Nishimoto of Japan won the title in the round of 32. His winning record against him is 4–2. It was also his first BWF final in over a year. Ranked sixth in the rankings, Sen had last played a final at the Commonwealth Games in August last year.
Earlier, India’s PV Sindhu was not at her best as she lost 14-21, 15-21 to Japanese number one Akane Yamaguchi in the women’s singles semi-finals.
