Chirag-Satwiksairaj created history, broke Saina Nehwal’s record in badminton ranking

New Delhi (Uttam Hindu News): Indian badminton stars Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy have created a new record by being the world number one men’s doubles pair for 10 weeks. Before this, no other Indian badminton player has remained at the top of the BWF rankings for so long. With this achievement, Chirag-Satwiksairaj have broken Saina Nehwal’s record of remaining at the top of the badminton rankings for nine weeks.

Asian Games champions Chirag-Satwik topped the Badminton World Federation (BWF) world rankings on January 23 this year after reaching the finals of the China Masters, Malaysia Open and India Open. Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy further strengthened their place at the top by winning the French Open in March.

Currently, Chirag and Satwik have 1,02,303 points on the leaderboard. They are more than 5,000 points ahead of second-place Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae of South Korea. In October last year, Chirag-Satwik became the first Indian doubles pair to be ranked world No. 1 by winning a gold medal at the Asian Games. However, he remained in this position for only three weeks.

In men’s singles, Kidambi Srikanth reached the top of the rankings in April 2018 but he remained on this ranking for only one week. Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal topped the badminton rankings on 18 August 2015 and held this position for a total of nine weeks till 21 October 2015. Now the Chirag-Satwiksairaj duo has broken their record by remaining at the top for 10 weeks.
