The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) plans to announce the new host of the 2026 Games next month and said it has ‘several proposals’ to replace Australia’s Victoria state. CGF said on Monday that it was keeping the proposals confidential. Victoria withdrew from plans to host the 2026 Games in three regional centers in July last year, citing rising costs.
“Significant progress has been made and we are encouraged by the initial concepts that aim to reset and redesign the Games,” the CGF said in a statement after its meeting in April. “We look forward to further detailed evaluation,” the CGF said in a statement after its meeting in April. “We are working closely with relevant members to achieve this and aim to announce the host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in May.”
Victoria has agreed a compensation package with the CGF which will help defray the expenses of the next host. Australia’s Gold Coast, which hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games, was earmarked as a potential 2026 host but could not get state or federal funding. The CGF said it is focusing on bringing changes to the games to reduce costs and make competition more logical.
Established as the British Empire Games in 1930, the Commonwealth Games is contested by 74 nations and territories. They have been organized in Australia, Canada, England, India, Jamaica, Malaysia, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales.
