Competition between Sanjay Singh and Anita Sheoran for the post of WFI President

New Delhi. Sanjay Singh and 2010 Commonwealth Games champion Anita Sheoran will contest for the post of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president. These two are the only ones left in the fray after other candidates withdrew. Sanjay, vice-president of the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association, is close to outgoing WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, while Anita is the only woman candidate in the August 12 polls. Anita has filed her nomination as the representative of Odisha unit while she hails from Haryana and is working in the state police. Two other candidates, Dushyant Sharma from Jammu and Kashmir and Jaiprakash, president of Delhi Wrestling Association and a close aide of Brij Bhushan, had also filed nominations for the post but both of them withdrew their nominations on Saturday, according to sources in the ad-hoc committee set up by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Returning officer and former Jammu and Kashmir High Court Justice Mahesh Mittal Kumar will release the official list of candidates on August 7. Elections will be held for the posts of President (1), Senior Vice President (1), Vice President (4), General Secretary (1), Treasurer (1), Joint Secretary (2) and Executive Member (5). Olympian Jayaprakash had filed nominations for three posts. He has also dropped out of the race for the post of general secretary, leading to a direct contest between Chandigarh’s Darshan Lal and Railway Sports Promotion Board secretary Premchand Lochab. For the post of Treasurer, there will be a direct fight between Satyapal Singh Deshwal and Dushyant Sharma of Uttarakhand. A member of the Brijbhushan faction said on condition of anonymity that their 16 candidates are in the fray for all the 15 posts. He said, “We are contesting for all 15 posts. Of our 18 candidates who had filed nominations, only two have withdrawn.” Jayaprakash will contest for the post of vice-president and ID Nanavati for the post of senior vice-president, he said.
