Cricket Australia postpones T20 series against Afghanistan

New Delhi . Cricket Australia (CA) on Tuesday announced that they have postponed the men’s T20 series against Afghanistan in August this year, citing deteriorating human rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.

The three-match series was to be hosted by Afghanistan, with the matches expected to be played in the UAE.

CA had earlier canceled the one-off Test match against Afghanistan, which was scheduled to be played in Hobart in November 2021. She later postponed the ODI series to March 2023 following the deterioration in human rights for women and girls in Afghanistan, adding that we will continue to engage with the Afghanistan Cricket Board in hopes of bettering the conditions of women and girls in the country.

CA said in a statement, “Over the past 12 months, CA has continued to engage with the Australian Government on the situation in Afghanistan. The Government’s advice is that conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan are worsening. Therefore, We have maintained our previous position and decided to postpone the bilateral series against Afghanistan.

“CA continues its strong commitment to supporting the participation of women and girls in cricket around the world. Will continue to actively engage the International Cricket Council and will work closely with the Afghanistan Cricket Board in the future to determine What action can be taken to resume bilateral matches.”

This is the third time CA has refused to play Afghanistan. However, Australia continues to play Afghanistan in ICC-run tournaments, with the two most recently facing off at the World Cup 2023 in India.
