After a century partnership by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway, with the help of Moeen Ali’s tremendous bowling, Chennai Super Kings defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 12 runs on Monday and made a spectacular return to their stronghold Chepauk after four years. Batting first, Chennai scored 217 runs for seven wickets. In reply, the Lucknow team could only manage 205 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs.
For Chennai, Moin Ali took four wickets for 26 runs in four overs and destroyed the top order of Lucknow. Tushar Deshpande also took two wickets. Kyle Myers, batting brilliantly in the second match for Lucknow, scored 53 runs in 22 balls with the help of eight fours and two sixes.
Nicholas Pooran played an inning of 32 runs in 28 balls in the last over. Apart from these, no batsman could play with aplomb. Captain KL Rahul got out after scoring 20 runs. Earlier, Gaikwad played the role of the facilitator of the innings for Chennai.
Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni thrilled the spectators at the Chepauk Stadium, the team’s stronghold, by hitting an 89-metre six. ‘Thala’ Dhoni hit two sixes but in an attempt to hit Mark Wood for the third six, he was dismissed after scoring 12 runs in three balls.
Gaikwad scored 57 runs in 37 balls with the help of three fours and four sixes, while Devon Conway played an innings of 47 runs in 29 balls which included five fours and two sixes. Shivam Dubey scored 27 runs in 16 balls which included one four and three sixes.
Wood, who took five wickets against Delhi Capitals on Sunday, took three wickets for 49 runs in four overs. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi took three wickets for 28 runs in four overs for Lucknow.
Sent in to bat first, Gaikwad and Conway scored 79 runs in the first six overs. Gaikwad, who scored 92 runs in the first match, maintained that rhythm and New Zealand’s Conway gave him full support. Chennai’s 100 runs were scored in the eighth over.
Gaikwad hit three sixes in the first over of K Gautam. Fast bowler Avesh Khan gave 16 runs in the first four balls of the second over. He took the wicket of Ben Stokes for 39 runs in three overs. Earlier, the match started a few minutes late due to the presence of a dog on the ground.
Chennai Super Kings have to play their next match against Mumbai Indians on 8th April. This match will be played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai which is the home ground of Rohit Sharma’s team. At the same time, Lucknow has to play its next match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 7th April.
