Danielle McGehee retires after ICC transgender decision

New Delhi. Danielle McGehee, the first transgender to play international cricket, has said it is ‘with a heavy heart’ that her international career for Canada is ‘over’.
Following a significant change to the ICC’s gender eligibility requirements, which banned transgender people from participating in women’s international matches, McGehee retired from international cricket.
“Following the ICC’s decision this morning, it is with a heavy heart that I announce that my international cricket career is over,” McGahee posted on Instagram. “It must end as quickly as it began.”
The ICC Board on Tuesday approved new rules according to which any player who has transitioned from male to female and has gone through any form of male puberty will not be allowed to participate in women’s international cricket, regardless of whether They may require any surgery or gender reassignment treatment.
McGahee, 29, originally from Australia, moved to Canada in 2020 and underwent a medical transition from male to female in 2021.
In September 2023, she played for Canada in the Women’s T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier, which serves as the pathway to the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.
“While I express my opinions on the ICC’s decisions, they are irrelevant,” McGahee wrote.
“What matters is the message being sent to millions of trans women today, a message that says we do not belong. I promise I will never stop fighting for equality in our sport, we will be at the highest level We deserve the right to play cricket. We are not a threat to the integrity or safety of the game.”
McGahee played six T20 matches and scored 118 runs at an average of 19.66 and a strike rate of 95.93.
