Mumbai: Former Australian all-rounder and Delhi Capitals assistant coach Shane Watson said that the team’s new captain David Warner would like to prove himself in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), starting March 31. Rishabh Pant will miss the IPL 2023 season due to injuries suffered in a car accident in December last year, prompting Warner to be appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals. Warner has previously captained a Delhi-based franchise when it was named Delhi Daredevils and found success as captain in the IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad when he led the team to the title in the 2016 edition. But he was dropped in the 2021 season due to poor form with the bat and then some rift with the team management. He was associated with Delhi Capitals in the 2022 season.
He is the highest run-scorer among overseas players with 5,881 runs to his credit. His poor form continued on the recent tour of India, failing in two Tests at Nagpur and Delhi while managing only 23 runs in the only ODI. He returned on this tour after recovering from a ‘hairline fracture’ in the elbow. Watson said, ‘David Warner is at the top of the order for me. He would like to prove himself. He has always scored so many runs in IPL. Whatever runs he manages to score as an opener will be crucial. ,
Former Australian vice-captain Watson hoped for Mitchell Marsh to continue the same explosive form with the bat that he showed during Australia’s ODI series win against India. Watson said, ‘This is going to be another big season for Mitchell Marsh. He’s got a lot of skill and the way he’s been performing with the bat, he’ll play a really big role. At the same time, Watson described Riley Rossouw of South Africa as a ‘trump card’ for Delhi Capitals for this season.
He said, ‘I played with him for Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League. Look at the way he has made a comeback in international cricket and is a world class hitter. He can tune out any bowler in any condition at any stage. If he walks away, he will take away the match from the rival team. ,
