Deepa Karmakar angry at not being selected for Asian Games, said- ‘It is disappointing and discouraging’

Star gymnast Dipa Karmakar is upset over not being selected in the Indian team for the Asian Games. After which he lashed out at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Sports Ministry, saying that the silence of these two bodies has left him disappointed and discouraged.

Dipa, who created history by finishing fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympics, recently finished first in her event at the Asian Games trials. But she was not selected in the Indian team as she did not meet the criteria of being in the top eight in the last two years. This was not possible in Dipa’s case as she was banned for two years for doping.

Dipa’s coach Bishweshwar Nandi had strongly criticized SAI two days ago and now the gymnast has openly expressed her displeasure on social media. She wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “This Independence Day, I would like to use freedom of expression to discuss recent events that have proved to be extremely disappointing and discouraging. The Asian Games 2023, which I have been attending for the past two years, Was waiting impatiently for years, now seems to be a distant dream.

As per the official norms, the performance of a sportsperson participating in an individual event in the last 12 months should not be less than that of a sportsperson who finished eighth in the Asian Games 2018. But with the efforts of All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Choubey, the Indian men’s football team was cleared to play in the Asian Games despite not meeting the criteria. Choubey is also the Secretary General of the IOA.

Deepa, on the other hand, believes that topping the trials was enough to get her selected. “It is surprising to me that despite topping the trials and meeting the selection criteria of the Sports Ministry, it seems that I will be debarred from participating in the Asian Games,” she said. Dipa further added, “The worst part is that the reasons behind this decision are unknown to me and I have not been told anything officially. Instead there are reports about me and my fellow players being thrown out of the Games.
