Deepak Bhoria and Narendra lost on the opening day of World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers

Indian players Deepak Bhoria (51 kg) and Narendra Beriwal (over 92 kg) suffered preliminary round defeats on the first day of the preliminary qualifiers for the World Olympic Boxing here on Sunday. World Championship bronze medalist Deepak was defeated by Azerbaijan’s Huseynov Nijat by a split decision of 3-2 while Narendra was defeated by Germany’s Nelvi Tiefach by a lopsided decision of 5-0.
Those boxers who fail to achieve the quota will get another chance to make their way to the Paris Games during the second World Olympic Boxing Qualifier to be held in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3. There was a tough fight between Deepak and Huseynov, who made it to the Indian team by defeating 2019 World Championship silver medalist Amit Panghal, as both the boxers adopted an aggressive stance from the beginning.
The young boxer from Azerbaijan troubled Deepak with his speed and sharp punches. Deepak lost both the first and second legs with the same score of 2-3. The Indian boxer gave a strong performance in the last three minutes. He managed to win this leg 4-1 but it was not enough to win the match. Narendra was seen struggling throughout the match against the German player.
Through this event, boxers will have a chance to ensure 49 Olympic quotas. There is a quota of 28 men and 21 women. Indian boxers have so far secured four quotas for the Paris Olympics. This includes the names of Nikhat Zareen (50 kg), Preeti Power (54 kg), Parveen Hooda (57 kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg).
