Berlin. Denmark beat Slovenia 2-1 to complete their qualification with a match remaining, while a 1-1 draw with Moldova was enough for Albania to book a place at UEFA Euro 2024 on Friday.
Denmark started in high spirits on home soil and came close with 11 minutes to play as Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak had to stop Jonas Wind’s dangerous header from central position inside the box.
The hosts slowly but surely increased the pressure and opened the scoring with 22 minutes gone but Joakim Mahele’s close-range goal was ruled out for offside, reports Xinhua news agency.
Slovenia could not stop Denmark and fell behind in the 26th minute when Victor Christiansen’s inswinging cross found Mahle at the back post, who fired the opener.
Denmark’s lead lasted only four minutes, as Slovenia equalized with their first attempt on goal when Eric Janza fired a free kick over the wall into the right corner, leaving goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel helpless.
The hosts came out with attacks after the restart and kept Slovenia’s defense busy. Denmark finally got the upper hand and took the lead again in the 54th minute when Thomas Delaney headed the ball home from a flicked corner. Gave.
The Danes have already sealed their top spot in Group H, while Slovenia still have some work to do as they need a point against Kazakhstan next Monday.
In other group matches, Finland beat Northern Ireland 4-0, while Kazakhstan kept their chances alive with a 3-1 win over San Marino.
Group E leaders Albania booked their ticket as they drew 1-1 with Moldova. The Czech Republic drew 1–1 with Poland, who will have to wait for a possible play-off.
England top Group C after beating Malta 2-0, and Italy are within a point of the final after beating North Macedonia 5-2.
