Colombo. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) chief selector Upul Tharanga said that Dhananjay de Silva has been appointed as the new captain of the Sri Lanka Test team in place of Dimuth Karunaratne.
Dhananjay will become the 18th cricketer to lead Sri Lanka in men’s Test matches.
Dhananjay has an impressive record of 51 Test matches, which includes ten centuries and 13 fifties. His first assignment will begin with the one-off Test against Afghanistan on 6 February.
Under the captaincy of Karunaratne, out of 30 Tests played, Sri Lanka won 12 and lost 12. Apart from this, 6 matches were also drawn.
His biggest success as captain was the Test series win in South Africa in 2018/19. He became the first Asian captain to do so.
Sri Lanka will start 2024 with a different captain for each format. He has removed Dasun Shanaka from the captaincy in both limited overs formats and appointed Kusal Mendis as captain in ODI and Wanindu Hasaranga in T20.
Sri Lanka will host Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in January. One of these test matches will be played against Afghanistan.
