Bengaluru: North Zone scored 306 for six in 87 overs at stumps on the first day of the four-day Duleep Trophy quarter-final against North East Zone at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, riding a composed century from Dhruv Shorey. Nishant Sindhu also played an important role in strengthening the innings with an unbeaten half-century of 76 runs. Delhi player Shorey was running in excellent form before this match and he continued the same rhythm. He scored 859 runs in seven matches of the 2022-23 Ranji season at an excellent average of 95.44, including three centuries.

The 31-year-old finished as the fourth-highest run-getter in the last Ranji Trophy season and his experience was reflected in his innings during the day. North East won the toss and decided to field. Shorey, however, took his time to settle against his fast bowlers Jotin Singh, Paljor Tamang and Dippu Sangma. The North East pacers were getting some help from the pitch but could not get Shorey and his opener Prashant Chopra out early with their pace.

Rained runs after a slow start
In the first 15 overs, the North Zone team could score only 29 runs. But once they understood the conditions and the bowlers, both the batsmen played freely which increased the run rate. By lunch, North Zone had scored 115 runs in 34 overs losing two wickets and both these wickets fell due to errors of the batsmen. Chopra tried to leave Jotin’s ball but he was not quick enough and got out.

Left-handed batsman Ankit Kalsi also could not understand Jotin’s ball and returned to the pavilion without scoring. In the post-lunch session as well, North East grabbed two wickets, with Prabhsimran Singh trying to attack Imliwati Lemtur only to be caught by Kishan Mittam. Sangma dismissed Ankit Kumar a little later, leaving North Zone at 162 for four in the 46th over.

Dhansu partnership of 80 runs between Shorey and Nishant
Shorey and Nishant shared an 80-run partnership for the fifth wicket in about 22 overs, which eased the pressure a bit from the North Zone team. Left-arm spinner Kishan Singha took two wickets in two balls, including the wickets of Shorey and skipper Jayant Yadav, to take the score to 242 for six. With about 30 overs left, Nishant and Pulkit Nangar put on a 64-run seventh-wicket stand to help the team recover and North Zone were in a good position until play was called off due to bad light.
