New York: Serbian veteran tennis player Novak Djokovic has taken the first step towards his 24th Grand Slam title by defeating Alexander Muller of France in the opening round of the US Open 2023. World No. 1 Djokovic made a strong start, winning the first six games of Monday’s match, and eventually won 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 over world No. 84. Djokovic said after the match, ‘I started very well outside the box in the first set. I was excited to be on the court. It’s been two years (playing at the US Open) and it’s always an honor and a pleasure to be here in front of you guys on Court Arthur Ashe.
“I think I could have served better in the second and third sets. I let my serve level go down and I had to work harder to earn points. Still, I think I played well from start to finish. Hopefully I can maintain it in the next round as well. It is noteworthy that Djokovic last appeared in the US Open in 2021, when Daniil Medvedev defeated him in the final and denied him the fourth Grand Slam of the year.
Djokovic could not participate in the tournament in 2022 due to America’s Kovid vaccine policy. Djokovic will face Spain’s Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the second round, coming off a 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 win over Ethan Quinn in the first leg. In other matches of the day, Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece beat Milos Raonic of Canada 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Tommy Paul of America defeated Stefano Travaglia 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
