The Pentagon has designated more than a dozen Chinese tech companies, including Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC), as “military companies”, citing national security concerns for the United States.
At the same time, these organizations include Artificial Intelligence (AI) firms Yitu Technology and Beijing Megvi, drone manufacturer Chengdu JOUAV, lidar manufacturer Hesai Technology and tech company NetPosa, all of which work in America but are accused of having links with the Chinese military. has been applied.
These additions to the 1260H list, established under the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021, put American and international companies on notice about entities potentially supporting Beijing’s military-industrial complex.
However, these companies are not completely banned. This makes companies ineligible for Defense Department contracts and can be blacklisted by the US Treasury Department, affecting their business prospects.
Three Chinese companies were removed from the updated list, but others like DJI Technology and BGI remained in it. After this, the Chinese Embassy in Washington criticized this move and also accused America of destroying national security and weakening its interests.
The identification of “Chinese military companies” is consistent with Washington’s broader effort to restrict U.S. investment in entities involved in dual-use technologies that could enhance Chinese military capabilities.
President Joe Biden’s executive order in August banned some US investments in China, particularly those related to sensitive technologies like artificial intelligence. Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer praised Biden’s action during a congressional hearing, suggesting legislative measures could expand further.
