The Hague: Dutch footballer Quincy Promes, convicted of drug smuggling and attacking his cousin with a knife, has been arrested in Dubai at the request of Dutch authorities. Dubai’s public prosecutor gave this information in a press release on Wednesday. According to the statement, the arrest was made with the help of a joint operation between authorities of the UAE and the Netherlands. This arrest was made on the basis of Red Corner Notice issued by Netherlands.
The Netherlands will now request Dubai Police to hand over Quincy Promes to them, Xinhua reported. Red Notice is issued to locate and temporarily arrest a person pending extradition, surrender or similar legal action from law enforcement around the world.
This is based on an arrest warrant or court order issued by judicial authorities in the requesting country. Member states apply their own laws in deciding whether to arrest a person. Last month an Amsterdam court sentenced Promes in absentia to six years in prison for his involvement in the smuggling of a large consignment of cocaine. However, the Dutch public prosecutor had demanded a sentence of nine years.
Last year, Promes was also jailed for 1.5 years for stabbing his cousin at a family party. The 32-year-old Promes, who played 50 matches for the Dutch national team, moved to Spartak Moscow from Ajax in February 2021 and as a resident of Moscow he has so far eluded Dutch police. However, he was arrested during a training camp in the UAE with his Russian club. It has also been said in the report that investigation is currently going on and more details cannot be given.
