New Delhi: Hockey India’s long-serving CEO Elena Norman resigned on Tuesday after holding the post for almost 13 years.
During his tenure at the top post, the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams reached great heights, achieved career-best world rankings as well as achieved a historic feat at the Tokyo Olympic Games, where the Indian men won bronze after a gap of 41 years. won a medal while the women finished an unprecedented fourth place.
Under his leadership, the federation hosted two consecutive editions of the Men’s Hockey World Cup in 2018 and 2023, hosted two Junior Men’s World Cups in 2016 and 2021 and also successfully hosted five editions of the Hockey India League, a franchise -based league that gained popularity. The performance of the Indian men’s hockey team improved as the youngsters got the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the most prestigious global hockey stars.
Under his tenure, Hockey India hosted several international hockey events including the FIH Champions Trophy, FIH World League Finals in 2015 and 2017, FIH Olympic Qualifiers in 2019 and 2024 as well as FIH Hockey Pro League domestic games.
Elena was also at the forefront of bringing women’s hockey into the limelight, providing them with the same facilities as the men’s team, including cash prizes recognizing exceptional performances at international events through the Hockey India Annual Awards.
She was particularly instrumental in the success of the women’s team qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics, a historic achievement as the team qualified for the first time and participated in the Olympics after 36 years.
The team also achieved consecutive Olympic quota places through the Olympic Qualifiers held in Bhubaneswar in 2019.
The CEO also led the launch of the Hockey India Coach Education Pathway, which equipped domestic coaches with global standards of coaching practices, along with various initiatives for Indian technical and match officials.
Accepting her resignation, Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said: ‘I would like to express my gratitude to Elena for her time and dedication. Not only as the President of Hockey India, but also as a former player and ardent hockey lover, I would like to formally acknowledge and express my heartfelt gratitude for his remarkable contribution over the last 12-13 years. His dedication and efforts have played a vital role in bringing Hockey India and Indian hockey to the commendable position it is in today. I wish him great success in all his future endeavours.
