New Delhi: Australian legend Ricky Ponting has lashed out at the umpires for an erroneous exchange of the ball during the fifth Ashes Test. Ricky Ponting has hit out at the umpires following Australia’s humiliating defeat in the final Ashes Test at The Oval. The ball being used in the fourth innings was replaced after 36 overs on the fourth day, but the ball that was taken looked to be in much better condition.
Change of ball is common in Test matches and the umpires are responsible for selecting the new ball. A ball equal to the over bowled by that ball is deemed to be taken. It is being claimed that the replacement ball was much better. Ponting criticized umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Joel Wilson for this. He said – My biggest concern was the condition of the ball chosen to replace it. Anyone can tell by looking at it.
He further said- If you are going to change the balls, then you have to make sure that it is done in the right way. There weren’t too many pristine condition balls. I don’t understand how two international umpires, who have done this many times before, can actually get it so wrong. This could be a game-changing moment. I think some things should be investigated.
