England have to go to Lucknow on Sunday and spoil India’s party: Nasser Hussain

New Delhi. Former England cricketer Nasser Hussain has urged the Jos Buttler-led England team to spoil India’s party and give them their first defeat while playing against the hosts in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on Sunday.

England, ranked ninth in the points table, are walking on a knife’s edge and are almost out of the race for the semi-finals. However, Nasser still finds the England team to be an impressive side and need to showcase their capabilities moving forward from the Ashes.

“The players have to take responsibility for this. I’m no expert in clichés like playing for badges, but that’s what England have to do now. They have to go to Lucknow on Sunday and spoil India’s party. They have to do that ” “Remind India and the world what a great cricketer he was and still is,” Hussain wrote in his column for The Daily Mail.

Earlier, after the crushing defeat against Sri Lanka, Nasser had questioned England’s approach to white-ball cricket and urged them to step out and take personal responsibility, calling it “the end of an era for the English team”.

“We’re talking about some of the greatest players in our white-ball history, but it’s proved to be a bridge too far for some of them,” Hussain told Sky Sports.

“I wouldn’t have changed the team before this tournament, but I’m definitely thinking about changing now because it feels like the end of an era.”

This does not take anything away from what this England team has achieved. We can all get down and out and say, ‘Let’s get rid of a lot of them’ but he has given us six or seven years of absolutely brilliant white-ball cricket.”

India is the only team without defeat in the World Cup with five wins in five matches. They are second in the points table after South Africa and their performance has been very good.

England will take on hosts India at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday.
